Speech in plenary during the debate on the arrest of Cardinal Zen in Hong Kong
Madam President, my dear colleagues, Kyiv is not Hong Kong, Taiwan is not Ukraine, China is not Russia. We all know this, it is obvious. But beyond these differences of nation, geography and culture, let us look at the reality.
The reality is that in Beijing as in Moscow, we are facing regimes that want to destroy democracy, that want to ensure the triumph of dictatorship over freedom, that want to ensure the triumph of moral, police and social order over what they call decadence and what we call freedom.
So, Cardinal Zen, rest assured: we will defend you and we will defend through you the cause that you incarnate, that of the freedoms of China, as fiercely, with tooth and nail, as we defend the freedom of Ukraine.
