Speech in the debate on the murder of Alexei Navalny and the need for EU action in support of political prisoners and oppressed civil society in Russia

Courage has a name. He is called Navalny. The courage shown by this man, the courage to brave death, facing his executioners with laughs, smiles and irony until the very end, the courage to change history by defying a war-mongering, lying, murdering tyrant, this courage calls on us Europeans not to fail.

We must tell these Trumpist representatives that they are covering themselves in a little more Ukrainian blood every day, that history will soon have placed them in the camp of cynicism and cowardice, and that they are shamefully betraying their country and the essential solidarity between the two sides of the Atlantic.

We must immediately hand over Taurus and Mirage to the Ukrainians. We must work day and night for our common defence, for the European shield that is the only way to ensure our security and the triumph of freedom.

We must ensure that Alexei Navalny’s killer could not cause any more harm.
