You have lost, Mr Putin

Oh sure, you will still kill, destroy, sow grief and disaster, but you have already lost because empires cannot be rebuilt, believe this from a Frenchman, and you cannot return to that absolutism of which you dream so much, believe this, too, from a Frenchman.

Let us move even faster towards a common European defence

It is not that he has become a humanist and respectful of borders. None of us, of course, would be naïve enough to believe that this is the reason why Mr Putin said yesterday that some of his troops were returning to their barracks and that there was still room and time for diplomacy, but then why did he put his foot on the brake?

Intervention in the plenary session on the “Continued repression of civil society and human rights defenders in Russia: the case of the human rights organisation Memorial”

Madam President, my dear colleagues, this movement that Mr Putin wants to muzzle was the first ray of sunshine of the perestroika. I will never forget the first meetings organised by Memorial with former Gulag prisoners who were reunited, who looked at each other, whose tears began to flow and who said in a weak voice: “It’s you, it’s really you”. Yes, they were the survivors.

Intervention in the plenary session on the situation on the Ukrainian border and in the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia

Foreword

Dear Readers,

welcome to this site.

It is not simply the webpage of the Member of the European Parliament, who I have become with great apprehension. Not of the journalist either, who I have been for half a century.

It is a wild ambition: I wanted to give a report on my work as an elected representative in Brussels and in Strasbourg, to continue to follow the evolution of world politics and to try to describe and decipher the stakes and the mysteries behind the scenes of the European institutions.

I wanted to create a multilingual site, to step across the borders that sometimes still separate us.

“Smithing makes the smith”, I hope you will bear with me.

Yours,

Bernard Guetta
