The most terrible thing is that they were black. It is the most terrible because if it is black police officers who could beat a young black motorist so coldly, so violently and without the slightest reason that he died, the explanation for this murder is not racism. What killed in Memphis was not the ordinary racism that still leads so many American police officers to make such a danger out of every black person that they must hit or shoot first, even to death, and only then think.

These fears, they are not to be rejected but to be taken into account. One is that by delivering arms to Ukraine, Americans and Europeans could enter the spiral of a Third World War. The other is that by refraining from calling on the Ukrainians to reach a territorial compromise with Russia, the West is leaving room only for war, at the expense of diplomacy.

This is the only benefit of the Brexit, but what a benefit! From North to South, from East to West, the number of Europeans who want their country to leave the EU is falling everywhere. The Guardian notes that the decline is 15.4% in Finland, 10.7% in Slovenia, 9.5% in the Netherlands and 8.3% in France.

These three words do not leave my lips because, really, “Happy New Year”? How can we wish each other a happy year after such a start in Brazil and when we all know that 2023 will be the continuation of the war in Ukraine, the hangings in Iran, the ravages of Covid in China and the rest, all the rest, let alone the acceleration of climate change?

So many unknowns are adding up that the next year is unpredictable. Will there be a Brutus to change the deal in Moscow? Could a defeat for Recep Erdogan in the June elections usher in a new era in the Middle East and across the Mediterranean? Will the Iranians overcome their theocracy, whose support would then be lacking for both Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad? Could inflation spiral out of control in Europe and cause enough social unrest to weaken the EU states?
